  • PREGNANCY COUNSELLING

If you have an unplanned pregnancy you may need extra help working out what is best for your situation. You can discuss your options with one of our trained staff.

You may be certain that you are unable to keep your pregnancy - you can then book in to see our doctors and have your abortion on the same day. Same day appointments
are available on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Post-procedure most women feel relieved, however some women need further emotional support. You can see our doctors or be referred if longer term counselling is required.

  • PREGNANCY TERMINATION

We do first trimester abortions [ less than 12.5 weeks from your last period] by the surgical method. You don't need a referral to see our doctors.

SURGICAL

First trimester [up to 12.5 weeks] surgical procedures are done under local [you are awake] or general anaesthesia [you are asleep]. The procedure is done by the suction method. The cervix [neck of the womb] is stretched gradually with curved instruments called dilators. A sterile slender plastic tube (diameter of 6-9 mm) is passed through the cervical canal into the uterus. Using a custom vacuum pump, the contents of the uterus are evacuated. The operation takes about 10 minutes and is very safe . If you are more than 12.5 weeks pregnant it is still possible to have an abortion, you can be referred to a doctor who does mid-trimester abortions.

MEDICAL

The abortion drug RU486 or Mifepristone is not yet commercially available in Australia. The clinic will offer this service as soon as a pharmaceutical company imports the abortion drug for commercial use. Some clinics offer medical abortion using the anti-cancer drug methotrexate. This method has more risks compared to the abortion drug RU486.

  • IUD and IUS INSERTION & REMOVAL

You can have either a non-hormone [ copper IUD] or a hormone secreting [Mirena] IUS fitted. These are both very reliable forms of contraception however they are not suitable for all women. You will need to visit the clinic for a consultation and infection screening first.

  • IMPLANON INSERTION AND REMOVAL

Implanon is a long lasting [3 years] form of hormonal contraception. It looks like a small plastic rod and is fitted in your upper arm. If required, you can have this fitted while you are having a pregnancy termination. You will need to visit the clinic for advice and to get a prescription for Implanon prior to having it fitted.
